PRP Therapy for Thinning Hair

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections are a non-surgical method of hair loss treatment and hair restoration for women and men.

PRP therapy harnesses the rejuvenating power of concentrated platelets from your own blood to stimulate hair regrowth.

PRP is also a well established and successful treatment method in orthopedics, plastic surgery, and sports medicine.

Reasons for Hair Loss

Most women and men will experience hair loss at some point in their lives. Many women are concerned about thinning hair or loss of hair on specific areas of their scalp, and male pattern baldness can occur even in younger men.

There are many reasons for hair loss, including:

  • Age and hereditary factors
  • Male pattern baldness (affecting most men)
  • Hormonal imbalance (caused by pregnancy, menopause, and certain drugs)
  • Hair damage caused by external factors (dyes, chemicals, styling tools)
  • Certain illnesses (including thyroid problems or anemia)
  • Emotional factors (such as stress and anxiety)
  • Scalp infections
  • Some medications (including blood thinners)

What is PRP Hair Loss Treatment?

PRP Therapy is an innovative hair restoration treatment that works by injecting concentrated platelets from the patient’s own blood into areas of the scalp. Platelet Rich Plasma injections nourish, stimulate and revive active and dormant hair follicles. The procedure is meant to:

  • Recruit new hairs to grow
  • Invigorate and revitalize existing hair

The therapy is non-surgical, with little to no side effects or risk of allergic reaction.

How PRP Treatment for Hair Growth Works

Human blood contains plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.

Platelet rich plasma (or PRP), is a concentrated serum of platelets.

Although they are known for their coagulating properties (to stop bleeding), platelets also release growth factors that recruit reparative cells and revitalize and heal tissues. In other words, platelets are components of the blood that help to rejuvenate and heal soft tissue throughout the body. For this reason, PRP injections have a long history of success in treating sports injuries, arthritis, tendinitis, and other painful conditions.

In cosmetic medicine, PRP injections are used to treat specific areas of the skin to promote collagen growth and regenerate tissue. In hair restoration therapy, PRP results have been very promising and offer an effective method to promote hair regrowth and thickening for a majority of patients.

Scalp Injections and Microneedling for Hair Restoration

PRP is a groundbreaking medical treatment that improves hair thickness, stimulates hair regrowth and naturally reverses thinning hair.

When PRP is injected into the skin, the injection causes minor inflammation that activates the platelets and allows them to do what they do best: generate growth.

Platelets do this by releasing healing proteins called growth factors.

When concentrated platelets are injected their impact is greatly magnified, (which is what happens during the PRP treatment), boosting natural processes and rejuvenating and restoring your hair.

PRP Injections are highly effective for both women and men. Features include:

  • Safe, non-invasive and non-surgical treatment
  • Minimal pain or discomfort
  • Minimal side effects

Benefits of PRP for Thinning Hair

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) stimulates cell growth in the injected area. PRP aids the hair growth process, without the use of chemicals or foreign substances.

PRP does not cause allergic reactions or infections, because the injected platelet rich plasma comes from the patient’s own body.

PRP hair treatment benefits include:

  • Hair regrowth
  • Improved hair texture and thickness
  • Increase in hair volume
  • Healthier looking hair

The treatment has proven to be most effective for patients who are at the initial and middle stages of hair loss, versus those who are completely bald. Therefore, if you are noticing an overall loss of volume in your hair, are starting to develop a receding hairline, or have noticed bald spots on your scalp, contact us today.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

A simple, virtually painless procedure, conveniently done at our Vancouver or New Westminster clinic.

Your appointment will begin with a simple blood draw, just like a routine blood test. Then, using a proprietary technique, platelets and plasma will be separated and concentrated into a serum that will be ready to be injected into the scalp.

We will then take a picture of the treated area to serve as a baseline to follow the hair restoration.

PRP injections are virtually painless and have few contraindications. The procedure lasts approximately 40 minutes. However, overall appointment duration will be a little over an hour for blood drawing and processing, as well as anaesthetic application.

Our technicians use a state-of-the-art automated injector that delivers the PRP to the scalp with precision and at the proper depth – which is 3 – 4 mm. Injections are administered with accuracy and consistency by the automated injector, minimizing human error.

Following the treatment, most people will experience heat, redness and mild to moderate swelling in the treated area. However, this should only last a day or two. Cold compresses will help reduce discomfort and swelling. Bruising can also occur and may last several days.

The risks and complications of PRP for hair loss include:

  • Headache (mild)
  • Bleeding (minimal if any)

  • Thrombocytopenia (low platelet count)
  • Acute and chronic infections
  • Chronic liver disease
  • Blood thinners (warfarin, dabigatran, heparin)

FAQ About Hair Restoration With PRP

Platelet-rich plasma is a concentration of platelets several times the normal blood value, and contains many growth factors that stimulate and activate hair follicles.  There is solid scientific evidence demonstrating that PRP is a powerful tool for hair restoration.

Yes. Because the injection uses your own blood, there is minimal risk of an allergic reaction and no possibility of a tainted blood product.

Our treatment is quick and you will spend an hour in the clinic. This includes time for collection and processing of your blood to concentrate the platelets to create the PRP solution.

While your PRP solution is being processed, you will be getting the anesthetic regional nerve blocks. They take seconds to become effective, after which we will use the automated PRP injector to deliver the PRP virtually painlessly into your scalp. You will have an opportunity after your treatment to review the after care instructions with your clinician should you desire to do so.

Results begin to show 3 to 4 months after starting treatment and generally continue to improve with time as the hair cycle progresses.

The human hair cycle includes phases of growth (anagen), regression (catagen) and rest (telogen). During each anagen phase, follicles produce an entire hair shaft from tip to root.

PRP treatment starts new cycles of growth.

Pollock Clinics’ expert medical team uses precision anesthetic techniques allowing for a near painless solution to your hair loss. Most patients report minimal to no discomfort during the procedure. You will likely have minor swelling the day after your treatment.

The number of required treatments will depend on the patient’s condition and improvement goals. Four treatment sessions are generally recommended, spaced 4 weeks apart.

The treatment will not cure the condition. However, it can significantly improve it.

We recommend that most patients have a maintenance treatment twice per year.

Ideal candidates for treatment are women and men with fine or thinning hair – either in patches, or generalized throughout the scalp.

Patients who have been completely bald for years may not experience significant benefits from PRP hair loss treatment.
