Dr. Chang Heads to Haiti!

The world population is expected to double in the next 50 years from 7 to 15 billion. According to The World Factbook published by the CIA there are currently 256 births every minute around the world or roughly 4 births every second. In the United States, unintended pregnancies results in $11 billion in healthcare spending alone.

The Effect of Overpopulation on Public Health

When I was traveling around North America training in vasectomy, I had the privilege of meeting and training with one of the leaders in the field Dr. Doug Stein. Some of you may have seen his documentary entitled “The Vasectomist”. If you haven’t, it is definitely worth a watch. Here is a link to the trailer. If you are interested in watching the entire documentary I found it online here.

Dr. Stein is committed to a global movement of reducing overpopulation around the world including unintended pregnancies and has received some serious media attention over the years. He heads the development division of No-Scalpel Vasectomy International Inc. a non-profit dedicated to providing vasectomies for men around the world primarily in Haiti, Kenya, and the Philippines, where he has performed up to 71 vasectomies in a day.

At the end of March, I will be joining Dr. Stein on a mission trip to Haiti to help train local physicians in the no-scalpel vasectomy technique and provide vasectomy for as many men as possible who need and want them. On their last trip in November, they performed vasectomies on 81 men who fathered a combined 436 children! I will be flying from Vancouver through Miami and connecting to Cap Hatien.

When I’m back, I’ll be sure to post some details and reflections on the trip, so stay tuned!
