Five Year Anniversary of Shang Ring Circumcision in Canada

There are as many circumcision methods available as the number of reasons why men may choose an adult circumcision procedure.

When Pollock Clinics doctors performed the first Shang Ring circumcision in their Vancouver clinic in January of 2018, another adult circumcision option was made available to men in Canada.

What is Shang Ring?

Shang Ring is a quick, virtually painless and bloodless procedure that also provides a sutureless circumcision without track marks. The Shang Ring consists of two concentric medical grade plastic rings: an inner ring with a silicone band and an outer, hinged ring that acts as a ligature. The Shang Ring can be removed after one week.

This safe and effective method was developed in China through the backing of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and has been in use there for many years, with over one million procedures completed by the end of 2016.

Shang Ring in Canada

Although the method was initially developed with an eye to creating a cost-effective circumcision method for resource-constrained environments, it has proven equally applicable in Canada – where it is employed for its benefits in the patient experience.

The procedure was certified by Health Canada in December of 2017, and in January 2018, almost 5 years ago today, Dr. Pollock and Dr. Chang from Pollock Clinics became the first Canadian doctors that offered this method of circumcision in North America.

Dr. Jack Chang & Shang Ring

Dr. Chang was most instrumental in getting Shang Ring’s certification by Health Canada almost five years ago. He has been performing Shang Ring adult circumcision at Pollock Clinics in Vancouver since January of 2018, and has since trained many other doctors who now perform the procedure at Gentle Procedures Clinics Worldwide.

Volunteer Missions Worldwide

Doctors Pollock and Chang also donate their time to many important causes within their field of medical expertise. Dr. Pollock participates in volunteer surgical teaching, including past missions in Haiti and Rwanda, to teach local surgeons his leading circumcision technique, which supports HIV reduction, potentially saving thousands of lives. Dr. Chang has volunteered countless hours in support of No Scalpel Vasectomy International (NSVI), a non-profit organisation dedicated to making vasectomy available in developing nations.
