A doctor could attempt a reversal procedure. Up to 7% of men may come to regret their decision to have had a vasectomy at a later date and look for a reversal procedure. However, a vasectomy is difficult and sometimes impossible to reverse. Chances of reversal are at best 70% within the first year after the procedure is done, and drops 10% further every year afterwards.

Considering these statistics many men (before their procedure is done) choose to buy what can be considered a type of "insurance", called sperm banking (cryopreservation). Sperm banks will store your sperm in a cryogenic freezer for a fee, in the event that the unforeseen arises later in your life and you should wish to have more children. Please read and download the required forms (FORMA and FORMB) you will need to fill out regarding sperm banking. Please follow the instructions on these forms. [Requires Adobe Acrobat Reader.]

WHY ARE SO MANY MEN CHOOSING TO STORE SPERM?

Please consider sperm storage. It is something you should consider not because you anticipate using it in the future but because you hope you won’t. In other words consider this as insurance for the unforseen things that can and do happen:

  • Death of a spouse
  • Death of a child
  • Divorce
  • Separation
  • Or just changing your minds
The following are excerpts and real emails received by Dr. Pollock from patients

“Dr. Pollock I feel silly asking you this, however, I am wondering if it is too late to store sperm . I had my vasectomy 2 months ago and now my wife and I are separating. I just couldn’t see it coming.”

“ Dear Dr. Pollock my husband’s brother just lost both his children in a car accident after his wife overturned the van on the highway. His wife is fine however, both children passed away. They did not store sperm and I am wondering what their options are.”

“Dear Dr.Pollock you did my vasectomy 3 years ago. My wife has since passed away of breast cancer. We have decided at that time we did not want any children, however, I met another woman who I have fallen in love with and we wish to have children. I did not have the foresight to store semen and now I am wondering what my options are. “

“Dear Dr. Pollock you did my vasectomy in 2001 and at this time my wife and I were convinced we wanted no further children. My wife has regretted it ever since and I am wondering if you could help us to organize a vasectomy reversal. Unfortunately we did not store any sperm”.

Gentlemen please consider all these true stories and understand that up to 7% of men change their mind within a few years of having the surgery done. A vasectomy reversal is not guaranteed, it costs $5000 and is a private procedure. It is a 4 hour micro-surgery. Be smart and think ahead. Just as you get life insurance, and disability insurance, so should you consider this insurance for the future.

  • Aristotle Onasis had his last child at 85 years old.
  • David Letterman at 58.
