Choosing to have a vasectomy is a serious decision because it is carried out with the intention of creating permanent sterility.

Notwithstanding this, our experience with patients over the years has shown that a significant numbers of men who opt for a vasectomy later change their minds about their desire to have children within a number of years after their vasectomy is done. Reasons for this include death of a spouse, death of a child, divorce, separation or just changing their minds. That is why we encourage everyone to consider sperm storage. Sperm can be cryogenically frozen and preserved for years, which provides an insurance policy for the future. No one ever thinks that they will be the one to change their mind.

We currently refer our Vasectomy clients to Genesis Fertility Centre for sperm storage: Genesis Fertility Centre (604) 879-3032 ext 260 (contact Holly Harris). All questions regarding sperm storage should be directed to Holly Harris.

For more information on the Genesis Fertility Centre you can view the online brochure: Genesis Brochure.

Also you can visit the website:www.genesis-fertility.com

Please be aware that before you can bring a semen sample to Genesis Fertility Center for storage, you will need to have blood tests done. To obtain the lab requisition form that you will need to take to the laboratory, please click the link here, print it out and bring it with you to the lab after you complete the information boxes. Lab Requisition Form.

The lab will then forward your blood results to Genesis Fertility Centre, and that process will take about 1-2 weeks. Once Genesis receives your blood results they will then be able to set up an appointment for you to come to the clinic where you will produce a semen sample in their private facilities and leave the sample with them for analysis and cryopreservation (storage).

Please note; before your vasectomy can be carried out, Dr. Pollock needs to receive the initial analysis of your sample intended for storage to ensure that it is an adequate sample. Genesis Fertility Center does a preliminary test and sends Dr. Pollock the result within 3 weeks of your visit to their center. Once we receive the result, the staff at the Pollock Clinics will contact you and advise you that the sample is adequate and you can proceed with booking your vasectomy.

After reading this; if like many of our patients you feel that sperm storage is right for you, please advise our office staff of this and they will immediately send the initial referral form to Genesis. Holly will then contact you and will advise you of the next steps.

Some personal circumstances that men need to carefully consider before choosing to have a vasectomy:

  • Age - Are you young and have no children?
  • Personal Stress - Do you think you might be making a hasty decision at a stressful time?
  • External Pressure - Do you feel pressured into the decision by someone or by circumstances?
  • Relationship Stability - Do you frequently question the stability of your relationship?

Permanent contraception will not likely help you resolve problems you experience in any of these areas.

If you have decided that no matter what the future brings you will not want any more children, then vasectomy is a very reasonable consideration for you.
